5 years on

My old computer is unupgradeable . One hard disk has quit. I tried and at some expense ( I bought RAM ) found nothing worked. I bought a copy of Windows 7 so i have upgraded to 64 bit which is somewhat a waste of time as i only have 4 gigs of memory. My Windows experience dropped to 5.9 on two fronts, hard disk and memory. When there were(momentarily) 8 gigs if RAM this went up to 7.2, 7.9 being the maximum.

This all began over Firestorm, the Second Life viewer, issuing a 64 bit version. I have long thought of upgrading to 64 bit and i discovered a couple of years ago that my system could handle 64 bit o/s. I am very stupid. I was given the opportunity to get 64 bit windows at launch but i went for the 32 bit. AND it worked well but I felt Windows 64 bit was the was forward. “You can never have enough RAM” is an old maxim. I had 4 RAM slots with 2 x 2 gigs. so two empty slots. Another set of 2 x 2 would bring it up to 8. AND it worked for a time then crashed while in Second Life. Buying RAM has to be done carefully. A good site like Mr Memory or better http://memoryc.com have a memory picker for your model. After two failed attempts with different 2 x 2 i decided to try 2 x 4 gigs of RAM. This worked for a while then crashed the system. This would always happen in Second Life and then started when i watched a movie. I ran every test you could think of. You can find them with Google. They are all free.

Tested and tested and tested some more. I could find no errors I reinstalled Windows 7 Pro into a newly formatted hard disk. Same result. Out of ideas I turned to the forums and had no luck, though one person : 968120designed a new system for me.

The Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool and its 33 page pdf about it. This does a complete test of your processor. SpeedFan shows the core temperatures.

Memtest86 Tests your memory from a CD start. You down load the system image and burn it onto a CD. Its the best. I’ve heard of people running it for hours. I only run one pass. You can always escape (ESC) out of it.

TechPowerUp GPU-Z will tell you all about your graphics card.

Dell Diagnostics Handy enough will test the whole system however it failed to spot any difficulty of RAM on my system so my feeling is its not as stressful as it could be.However a good suite to use to test everything if you have a dell of course.

CPUID has a few programs HWMONITOR shows temperature as does CORE TEMP.

nCleaner will clean up your registry and hard disk.

There are more, you can find free programs to test everything.

After tearing my hair out for a couple of weeks and nearly giving up my job in Second Life I got a stable 64 bit system with 4 gigs of RAM.

My computer is 5 years old, one of my RAID disks failed and the RAM fiasco has left me with no confidence that the machine will last. 5 years is about right for upgrading. So a new computer is in order.

A Dell:

Base is an XPS 8700

Processor: i7 – 4770 4th Gen 3.7 GHz, which can be overclocked to 3.9 GHz. Just about the fastest processor on the market.
Memory 16GB Dual Channel DDR3 1600MHz – 4 DIMMs Plenty of RAM with room to expand to 32 gigs
Video Card AMD Radeon HD R9 270 2GB GDDR5. Got good reviews and is GDDR5 the fastest memory going. with DisplayPort (v1.2), DVI, VGA and 4x USB ports
Hard Drive 2TB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive + Intel SRT 32GB SSD Cache.  A solid state cache and two terabytes make this a good choice.

Dell 27 Monitor, P2714H, 27″ . Hmmm A second monitor to go next to the 22 inch. An extravagance? Perhaps but when I had two monitors before I loved it. There is a 40% increase in productivity. And if you are going to upgrade…

An exciting bit of kit : Dell TP713 Wireless Multi-touchpad . I wasn’t bothered about getting Windows 8 as I like Windows 7 a lot and I don’t wan a touch screen. So  The Dell Wireless Touchpad has been designed to give you an outstanding Windows® 8 touch experience with easy swiping, smooth scrolling and a full surface touch experience; all wrapped-up in a slim-line modern design that looks stylish in virtually any workspace, Works up to 32 meters. Sore kara . (its Jananese meaning it follows logically doesn’t it) I can have 8.1.

I might get new speakers and a sub woofer.

Getting the money will take four months or i might go for finance.  Will my current system hold up? I dunno.

Carpe Diem ~ Seize The Day

Flat Fact : Carpe diem is a phrase from a Latin poem by Horace. It is popularly translated as “seize the day”. Carpe means “pick, pluck, pluck off, gather”, but Horace used the word to mean “enjoy, make use of”..” And Idtei gave me Bucky

Enjoy, Make Use Of, Gather

For me, when I see something cool I enjoy it and then I MAKE USE OF IT! I Seize it. My PA had logged off my account and logged in to hers. When I was back in front of my computer I started Google.

WTF? Wow thats cool! What is it? I looked at the source of the page and it was described as a buckyball. Hmm, new to me. I did some searching and REsearching. Wow thats interesting. I should know this…did a bit more researching ….hmmm Fullerene… Great a little vid explaining it. Right I’ll seize that, so i turned it into an animation BECAUSE I KNOW HOW TO DO STUFF!! Here is the result >>>

I am now an expert in Molecular Dynathingys so please call me Prof Phil. Yea, right “Look daddy pretty moving pictures… ” but i do know more than I did yesterday and someone sometime somewhere might explain it to me.AND its now on my book shelf in my Library. You can download it and save it too if you wish. Bottom Line : Molecules especially this one are pretty goddamn important and just help me realise what an amazing universe we live in. Im not THAT bright I just work hard and love what I do. This helps a bit:

Fullerenes are a group of molecules made with only carbon atoms. These molecules exhibit very special properties. The reason why scientists are interested in understanding the behavior of fullerenes is because they have extra ordinary properties in superconductivity, electricity and elasticity. They could have numerous applications to improve many of our existing products and develop new products. There are lots of unexplained answers regarding the behavior of fullerenes. It is believed that making simulations of these molecules is the most safe and efficient approach.

I was chatting to my friend Idtei and out of the blue she mentioned Buckminster Fuller ! OMG gf you star! Look:

Richard Buckminster “Bucky” Fuller (July 12, 1895 – July 1, 1983)[1] was an American engineer, author, designer, inventor, and futurist.

Fuller published more than 30 books, inventing and popularizing terms such as “Spaceship Earth”, ephemeralization, and synergetics. He also developed numerous inventions, mainly architectural designs, the best known of which is the geodesic dome. Carbon molecules known as fullerenes were later named by scientists for their resemblance to geodesic spheres.

Bucky = Buckminster Bucky Ball. Oh Idtei I do love you you are a supastar!

Or was it out of the blue? Shes damned clever…..

More? Ok:

“Time and Tide Waits For No Man” [sic] btw sic = This word is sometimes inserted in a quotation [sic], to call attention to the fact that some remarkable or inaccurate expression, misspelling, or the like, is literally reproduced. So many of our stock phrases use the masculine “Man” , for me this engenders the male superiority trip dissing Woman again. So use it please if you must quote.

{Geraldine B: could you ignore this next bit, as it is not formalised yet}
In life we must be aware of things around us. Yesterday I was walking around my home town eyes and ears akimbo when I heard a woman speaking agitatedly on the phone. “No, its closed! I don’t know if there is another cybercafé in town….” Huh? I went to Patrick’s door and yes sure enough the signs had gone. MyOffice Cybercafé was Gone! Philip : “Seize The Day!” I went home an hour later I had produced this :

Please consider the following: Tullamore has no cybercafé
In 1995 I started training people in ECDL type course. In 1998 I opened a cybercafé called Midnet. Both were very very successful. Often the cybercafé had to turn people away. When ECDL proper came out we were a registered training centre. We ran courses 4 nights a week and did this for nearly two years non-stop. It was very very successful. We were a wireless ISP, whereby you could connect to the Internet wirelessly within line of site from 5 Bridge Street. The mast is still there. We had repeater masts so we covered all the way to Charleville Castle. The Offaly County Enterprise Board were connected to the Internet through us. We designed web sites for Offaly County Council, the Midland Regional Authority and the Bridge House. We had (and have now) a secure server able to accept and process credit cards.
Why did we fail? Our Internet Connection cost us over £2000 per month now it would cost 60 euros. We were technologists and trainers. We lacked business acumen. I became very ill. I am no longer ill.
Today we have 9000 people unemployed. One of the key features to gaining employment is having the appropriate skills. In 2010 two vital, essential skills are knowing how to use a modern computer, especially Windows 7 and knowing how to use the internet. I am a qualified expert in both.
Consider this:
1. FÁS run wonderful on-line courses and other computer courses. I know as through them I am now a Microsoft Certified Application Specialist in Excel and by the end of the month will have my cert in PowerPoint. It would be great if folks had somewhere to practice with a knowledgeable person around to give them advice.
2. The Library has terminals and is involved with eLearning. They have four computers. It would be great if they had more but there is no reason why a cybercafé couldn’t assist.
3. Our school students need computer resources.
4. The VEC run courses, we can support the learning by having a practice area where friends could chat and practice their skills.
5. My courses can be run there. Not to replace existing courses run by official bodies but to compliment, polish and give advanced features not covered by standard courses. I am in the process of certification with FETAC
6. I will actively support those with disabilities and will have wheel chair access.
7. A cybercafé is an essential resource in any town.
Why have I asked you to read this? Because last time I did it alone. I will not make that mistake again. If I am to do this and approach the Offaly County Enterprise Board for funding I need community approval. I need a statement saying “This is a good idea, we agree with you”. If your organisation cannot do it then please give a personal statement with comments. If you have a notice board and you feel ok with this, please put it up. I am only a blow in.I walk around Tullamore and notice the empty premises. A new boutique has opened in Church Street. We now have 15 and all of them are offering huge discounts. And everybody is broke.

I photocopied a hundred and did the rounds of Professionals I knew personally, organisations I knew and shopkeepers I knew. I have 10 left.

I Seized The Day.

Epilogue : I made this this morning for Shaun’s Blog. Well, its International Beard Day and Shaun’s been chatting about it so did a bit more seizing and graphicalling.  Im in the process of setting up Neologising.com coz thats what I do. When I want a word that doesn’t exist i neologise, its kinda caught on. (ssshh its also fun). Of course to be a “proper” neologism its got to be accepted. I just like evolving language. You probably know that “Google” is a neologism and so is “Twitter”……

I Love You Micons!
